Opportunity lies in the ability to achieve a useful result out of what may not appear at first to be an ideal fit. Many businesses need help and so to do students getting ready for the workforce. Coop programs are well known and for long have represented one end of the spectrum. The other being the traditional path to graduate and then go to work.
Now newer and more flexible options allow business to get the help they need while young individuals get a a change to hone their skills in any number of disciplines. The Capstone project at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is one such example. Don’t be misled by the university’s name, it offers a full range of programs. What the Capstone program will do do is match up a business with a group of young people who will provide sound talent to enable the vision of the business leader.
The interested business has to know what it wants to achieve and be able to formulate a clear set of objectives to guide the program selection process. The old rule garbage in, garbage out is a good one to keep in mind. The level of discipline and clarity of thought that goes into defining what is needed will help you to get the right people, set the right tone, and achieve the desired outcome.
